Believe it or not, Americans spend more money eating out than on groceries each year! Both categories have grown over the last ten years, but sales at restaurants and other eating and drinking locations have grown much faster. The trend as pointed out in Quartz Media’s article No One Cooks Anymore reflects the growing number of women in the out-of-home workforce.
So, with growing dollar allocation to restaurants, is it a good time to enter the restaurant business? We have all heard that the rate of business failure is led by the restaurant category. The icing on the cake is that “most fail in the first year”. This is a fallacy! Forbes reported that 17% of restaurants close in the first year where other service providing businesses have a 19% fail rate in year one.
It’s an exciting time to be a small business owner and an even more exciting time to be a small business owner in the restaurant industry! We thrive as a restaurant because our customers love to hear our story. That story revolves around our community and without that strong support base we wouldn’t be where we are today.
